Horrifying photo shows the magnitude of the waste problem in Metro Manila

  • Have you seen the viral photo of Estero de Binondo on Facebook?
  • You will surely be appalled at the sight of the sea of garbage.
  • After going viral, govt officials decided to take action to transform the river.

Metro Manila is a modern metropolis with skyrocketing buildings and dazzling city lights. However, what they don’t tell you in the promotional flyers is the other face of Metro Manila that everybody sees, but choose to ignore. Just like any major citiy, Metro Manila is has several underlying issues, such as the waste problem.

If you have ever strolled along the cramped streets of Binondo, Manila, then you might have noticed the popular Estero de Binondo. Back in the day, this river was considered one of the best known tourist spots in the city.

However, time has taken a toll on its beauty. Nowadays, the once-breathtaking view is barely recognizable after being basically transformed into a floating landfill. That says a lot about the waste problem in Metro Manila.

To show the magnitude of the waste problem in the area, a concerned citizen named Sidney Snoeck took a horrifying photo of the Estero de Binondo on February 12. At first glance, you would think that you are gazing at a landfill because of all the trash. However, upon closer inspection, you will see that this is actually Estero de Binondo drowning in a sea of garbage!

Right after posting the photo, it immediately went viral on social media. Appalled with the horrifying waste problem in the area, many people called for the attention of the local government to conduct an immediate clean-up of the river.

To restore the old beauty of Estero de Binondo, different organizations such as the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission and different barangays joined forces to keep the area garbage-free. In the end, people were delighted to see the results! Even Sidney Koeck commended everybody who chimed in:

“Congrats to the Brgy for cleaning up the mess. This was not and never was a political issue. We just need to take care of our environment.”
