Our family is supposed to keep us safe, fed, loved, and protected. Indeed, members of the family are the people you learn to love and trust before anyone else. This belief was what pushed a struggling mother to entrust her child to her immediate relatives. Because she had no money to raise the child, Carolyn Parsons handed her daughter over to her brother Sandy Parsons and his wife Casey. But little did Carolyn know that her daughter, Erica Parsons, would not live a long and happy life under that roof. The disabled girl lived a traumatic life that was kept hidden until her skeletal remains were found in Chesterfield County, South Carolina back in October 2016.
It was reported that Erica disappeared from her adoptive parents’ house in 2011 but a formal report was only filed two years later. Her family’s nightmares came true after Erica’s decomposing remains were discovered. Now, the autopsy revealed how the poor, disabled girl lived a life of abuse, trauma, and pain.
Signs of malnutrition and physical abuse surfaced. There were broken bones and multiple fractures discovered in the 13-year-old’s “nose, jaw, upper right arm, nine ribs and several vertebrae.” She may have suffered from an untreated infection, renal failure or poisoning that possibly caused her death. There is no denying that Erica’s adoptive parents did not care for her.
Sandy and Casey Parsons are currently in jail because of fraud after accepting the $12,000 (roughly PHP 600,000) in federal benefits. It was very likely that the couple would be facing criminal charges regardless, due to the evidence presented by the autopsy. Also, while the search for the young girl was on-going, a lot of her relatives came forward and testified about the abuse and maltreatment Erica endured. An example would be her fingers were bent all the way back and that she was being fed dog food.
The family, and those invested in this tragic story, await the additional charges that may be filed against Sandy and Casey. We offer our deepest condolences to those who are grieving Erica’s death.
What could have possessed both Sandy and Casey to do these horrible things to their own niece? Do you think that the couple’s punishment is enough? Share your thoughts, reactions, and opinions in the comments section below!
