This is exactly the kind of stuff that makes up nightmares: a prison inmate thought to be dead wakes up at the morgue, miraculously regains consciousness, but is unable to communicate to anyone that he is still alive. The autopsy begins, and doctors cut up a fully conscious and thoroughly unlucky man.
Fortunately for Gonzalo Montoya Jimenez, a 29-year-old prison inmate from Spain, the forensic team preparing him for post-mortem examination noticed he still shows signs of life. He was promptly transferred to the ICU, where he miraculously ‘resurrected’ and recovered enough to be able to talk. The first thing Gonzalo asked about was his wife.
Imagine how disastrous it would be for a man to wake up at the morgue while his insides are being extracted and eventually discarded.
Now, doctors are still in the process of finding out why exactly the prison inmate was originally thought to be dead. See, it is very rare (while it really does happen) that a person comes back to life after being pronounced dead.
The facts: Gonzalo was found unconscious in his prison cell at the Asturias Central Penitentiary in Villabona around 8 in the morning. Three different doctors then examined his body, before he was sent to the mortuary after all three pronounced him dead.
He showed no signs of life for four straight hours leading to his scheduled autopsy. Fortunately, the prison inmate’s snoring told doctors and the forensic team that he might still be alive.
A spokesperson from the Spanish Prison Service told the story of how Gonzalo’s family had already been informed of their loved one’s death.
“Two prison doctors concluded he had clinical signs of death following a morning roll call and informed police, his next-of-kin and a local duty court as part of standard procedure.

“We got the original call asking us to attend the jail because an inmate had died and acted according to protocol.
“He was taken away for an autopsy without police presence because at that point he was thought to be dead.
“The second call that came in asking for police assistance in taking him to the hospital and keeping watch over him while he was there for obvious security reasons obviously came as a bit of a surprise.”
Netizens also have a thing or two to say about this incident:
At present, Gonzalo is under intensive care but is reportedly in good condition. He may have suffered oxygen deprivation during the time he was thought to be dead, though, and its long-term adverse effects remain to be seen.
Right now, the closest explanation doctors has as to why Gonzalo was thought to be dead for many hours was that he probably suffered from catalepsy, a condition where the patient experiences diminished responsiveness and can remain in one position, unmoving, for days on end.
It is not yet clear, though, if Gonzalo indeed suffered from this condition.
What do you think about this story? If you were a doctor and a man wakes up at the morgue under your watch, what do you think your first reaction would be?
