Although this generation has seen a wider acceptance of the LGBTQ community, some cultures today are still not ready to embrace our gay brothers and sisters as equals. In recent news, the Mecca Police arrested everyone involved at a ‘gay wedding scene’, the video of which went viral online. In the video, two men can be seen walking side by side on what seemed like an aisle on an outdoor venue within the Holy City. One of them was wearing a long bridal veil. As they walked, they were sprayed with confetti by all the other men present at the event while festive music played in the background.
On January 8, the Mecca Police said they have identified the couple as well as all the other men involved at the controversial wedding scene. They have since been arrested, and their case referred to the prosecutors.
In a Twitter post, the Mecca Police gave a short statement which read:
“The man said people attending the event were surprised when a few young men entered the place and tried to perform a ‘gay wedding scene’.’
After the crossdresser and other people involved in the incident were identified, they were all arrested and their case will now be referred to the prosecution.” (translated from Arabic)
While no written laws concerning sexual orientation or gender identity exist in Saudi Arabia, its justice system depends on the principles of Islamic Law to punish people involved in extra-marital sexual relations, homosexual relations, and other ‘immoral acts’. In other words, while there is no legal basis for the prohibition of homosexuality, Muslims have outlawed such behavior based on religious grounds. Homosexuality is thus punishable in the Saudi Arabia and other Muslim countries, with punishment ranging from lashings to death.
A number of Muslims were outraged by the viral video. Some blamed the ‘phenomenon of homosexuality’ on foreigners.
Others, however, expressed their approval of their country’s new leader, Mohammed bin Salman, for creating a more tolerant society towards homosexuals.
As of writing, the Mecca Police has neither named those who were arrested nor specified the charges that they faced.
