A 43-year-old doctor, Dr. Zhao Bianxiang, died after working for 18 hours non-stop at a hospital in China. She reportedly collapsed in her patient’s ward on December 29, just days before New Year, and was declared dead on the morning of December 30.
Dr. Zhao worked at the Department of Respiratory Care of the Yuci District Hospital in Jinzhong. Her colleague then reported to the news outlet that she started working at 6 P.M. on December 28. She only finished tending the outpatients at 12 midnight, then she proceeded to check the wards right after.
She also did not take any breaks during her shift, which contributed to her stroke.
“In winter, the departments of pediatrics and respiratory care have the most patients. Often times, doctors couldn’t finish work on time because they are too busy. In addition, the Department of Respiratory Care had some extra tasks recently. Dr. Zhao was really too tired.”
Ma Xiaoma, a local journalist, happened to be at the hospital when Dr. Zhao passed away. The doctor suddenly passed out while she was checking her patient and had just completed her appointments in the morning. Dr. Zhao’s heart rate, according to reports, suddenly dropped. Her fellow doctors then brought her to the intensive care unit (ICU).
A colleague also claimed that Dr. Zhao was a workaholic and never refused if someone asks for help, whether it was her shift or not. A video then showed her colleagues and relatives, especially her mother, in tears. Journalist Ma also reported that the mother would not let go of her daughter’s hand while the father broke down beside her as her body laid on the hospital bed.
