Previously, Isabelle Duterte caught the public’s attention when she staged her pre-debut pictorial inside the country’s seat of power – Malacañang Palace. Now, President Rodrigo Duterte shared his thoughts about the public’s sentiments against the controversial incident.
In a report by Philippine Daily Inquirer, Duterte said that the pictorial was just a small matter. He said in an interview:
“It’s a small matter. Gamitin lang ang Malacañang. Wala naman ako doon and even if I was there, eh, kung granddaughter ko magpa-picture, lahat nga ng mga bisita dyan nagpapa-picture eh.”
“You know that girl, ang nanay nya Maranao. May mga (kaanak) ako na Muslim. Kaya kayong mga Moro don’t be offended by my words. I am just trying to tell you that there’s a problem which we have to solve together.”
Isabelle is a Grade 12 student at the Ateneo de Davao. She is the daughter of Davao City Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte with his ex-wife, Lovelie Sangkola Sumera.
The photos were initially uploaded on social media by Isabelle’s own glam team. It featured her posing beside the Philippine flag and before the seal of the President. Another photo showed her in the carpeted hallway that leads to Rizal Hall. She was also seen posing before the fountain in Malacañang’s grounds.
As expected, lots of netizens reacted against the photos and claimed that her photos are evidence that she is not living up to the simple lifestyle that her family is publicly known for.
Apart from that, they said that it is too glamorous for a 17-year-old like her to have a grand pictorial that casually uses the official residence of the president.
Meanwhile, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque cited that Isabelle was free to conduct her pictorial in the Palace grounds. He said:
“The President is entitled to live in Malacañang. He opted not to pero siguro naman mga kamaganak niya, sarili niyang apo, puwede magpa-picture-picture sa Malacañang.”
